Introducing the PEERS Program
The Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) was developed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to help individuals improve their social skills and relationships. Originally designed for adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder, PEERS has since been expanded to benefit individuals with other social challenges as well.
PEERS focuses on teaching important social skills such as making friends, maintaining conversations, handling peer conflict, and dating etiquette. The program utilises evidence-based practices to provide participants with practical strategies for navigating social situations successfully.
The 14-week Peers Program is designed to provide support and guidance to individuals seeking to improve their mental health and well-being. Here is an overview of how the program works:
Duration: The program runs for 14 weeks, with participants attending regular sessions during this period.
Group Sessions: Participants engage in group sessions led by trained facilitators where they can share their experiences, learn coping strategies, and train their social skills.
Topics Covered: Throughout the program, various topics related to mental health are covered, such as self-care, communication skills, and goal setting.
Peer Support: The program emphasises peer support, allowing participants to connect with others facing similar challenges and provide mutual encouragement.
Homework Assignments: Participants may be given homework assignments to practice the skills learned during the sessions and apply them in their daily lives.
Carer/Parent Participation: The parents/carer have a very important role. The program includes 90 minutes of parent/carer group support per week, where we go through the homework assignments, the content of the week and discuss how to better support the participants.
Benefits of Online Delivery
Offering the PEERS program on an online platform offers several advantages, particularly in reaching more people and providing support to individuals in remote areas. Here are some ways in which online delivery can enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of the PEERS program:
Increased Reach
Online delivery eliminates geographical barriers, allowing individuals from anywhere in the world to participate in the program.
People in remote areas or those with limited access to in-person services can benefit from the program without the need to travel to a specific location.
Cost-Effective Solution
Online delivery can reduce the costs associated with in-person sessions, making the program more affordable and accessible to a wider range of individuals.
Participants can avoid expenses related to travel and accommodation, making the program more cost-effective for both the organisers and the attendees.
